Andrew Garfield Recalls 20-Year-Old Screen Test With Ryan Gosling: ‘Felt Like Working With James Dean’
Andrew Garfield recently talked about Ryan Gosling’s screen presence, which left a lasting impression on him nearly two decades ago.

Andrew Garfield, known for his portrayal of Spider-Man, recently took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about the influence Ryan Gosling had on him nearly two decades ago. Long before Garfield became a household name and earned two Oscar nominations, he was a budding theatre actor auditioning alongside Gosling for a planned adaptation of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.

In a recent interview with People, Garfield reflected on the experience, comparing Gosling’s talent to that of legendary icons like James Dean and Marlon Brando.

“It felt like what I imagine it would’ve felt like working with James Dean or Marlon Brando. Like an alive animal, spontaneous. That kind of style. You don’t know how he’s going to behave. It’s inventive. It’s truthful. It’s messy. It’s alive. I was like, ‘I want to do that,” he said.

Since then, Garfield has built an impressive acting career, showcasing his versatility across genres. From intense dramas like The Social Network to superhero hits like The Amazing Spider-Man and even the musical Tick, Tick… Boom!, Garfield’s range is undeniable. His work also includes films like Never Let Me Go (2010), Silence (2016) and The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021).

Although his much-anticipated collaboration with Gosling never materialised, Garfield remains enthusiastic about the idea. When asked what kind of project he would like to do with Gosling, Garfield just said, “Anything really.”

“I would just love to dance with him. So to speak, I just think he’s a remarkable actor and I would love to do anything with him. But I don’t know. I have too many favourites of his to mention. But you know, The Nice Guys is such a great film and I think what he brings to his comedic roles I find so inspiring. So I would love to maybe do something like that with him,” he told the magazine.

In his recently released film, We Live in Time, Garfield shares the screen with Florence Pugh for the first time. Garfield portrays Tobias, an easy-going man whose life takes a sudden turn when his partner, Almut (played by Pugh), is diagnosed with cancer.

Speaking to People, Garfield, whose mother Lynn passed away from cancer in 2019, shared that the script felt close to his own life at the time. “It wasn’t exactly what I was going through. But thematically, is what I was exploring in my life and sitting with and wondering about,” he added.

We Live in Time premiered in theatres on October 11.
