Mumbai: The new superjumbo of the aviation world airbus A-380 is expected to start commercial operations next year. But can this giant aircraft land at any of the Indian airports?

Mumbai airport director Sudhir Kumar says the airport will be ready to receive A-380s as soon as it starts operation.

"Its going to be a new year gift from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to passengers travelling to and from Mumbai," Kumar said.

"Chhatrapati Shivaji airport will undergo major upgradation and will have swanky terminals very soon. It will also be capable of receiving superjumbos like the A-380s when this work is complete," Kumar added.

Queues, long delays and missing baggage could soon be a thing of the past. AAI which recently finished work on the departure building in Chhatrapati Shivaji airport, will also inagurate a swanky new arrival terminal.

Not just the domestic terminal but runways and air-bridges at Chhatrapati Shivaji international terminal will also get a new look in the second phase of modernisation.

AAI believes the airport is ready to handle the rapid growth in number of passengers which is expected to double in the next five years.
