With many parts of the country staring at severe drought, the condition in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh continues to be the worst.
In 2015, Telangana declared 231 out of 443 rural mandals as drought-affected and sought an immediate assistance of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre for relief measures. A high level committee of the Central government headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had approved Rs 791 crore in January 2016.
The state had also declared all the mandals in Mahabubnagar (64), Medak (46) and Nizamabad (36) districts as drought-hit. Other mandals declared as drought-hit include 33 out of 37 in Ranga Reddy, 19 of 57 in Karimnagar, 22 of 59 in Nalgonda, and 11 of 51 in Warangal.
On the other hand, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh declared 196 mandals out of 670 as drought-affected during the Kharif season in 2015. These include 10 mandals in Srikakulam, 21 in Prakasam, 14 in Nellore, 39 in Chittor, 33 in Kadapa, 39 in Anantpur and 40 in Kurnool.
The Supreme Court had on Wednesday urged the Centre to immediately provide relief to drought-hit states, pointing out that soaring temperature in the summer of 2016 would worsen the situation.
