A man from Coochbehar district in West Bengal allegedly attempted death by suicide by consuming poison on being cornered by three women at once, all claiming to be his girlfriends. The man was treated at a hospital, and was discharged and sent home, police said. The village head has said the man will be questioned once he recovers.
Police identified the man as Shubho, who is a salesman at a local medical store in Jorpatki. Police said the incident took place two days after Kali Puja, when three women, all claiming to be Shubho’s girlfriends, turned up at his doorstep. The women claimed that he was having an affair with all three at the same time, and when they found out about his fraud, they contacted each other and decided to pay him a visit together, police added.
There was a heated exchange of words at Shubho’s doorstep, following which he ran inside and consumed poison, police said. Neighbours rushed him to a hospital, but he was later moved to Coochbehar district hospital.
A local village resident said, “We never knew that this man had so many relations, these girls suddenly came in and we saw them fighting and then he consumed poison. Our panchayat pradhan, police, everybody came in.”
The panchayat pradhan said, “I don’t know why such an incident took place. We will look into the matter and he will be questioned.”
Police further said Shubho was not speaking to anyone after he returned from hospital, while his family members were too embarrassed to comment on the matter. So far, there is no police complaint lodged against Shubho, and the women have also not been seen in the area after the incident.
Local sources said the love affairs started through Facebook and the women would visit him at the shop where worked from time to time.
