New Delhi: The Taliban on Tuesday told an international news agency that they have killed Indian hostage M R Kutty, a driver of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The report has not yet been confirmed by Indian officials in Kabul or by the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi.
The government official said that there is still no confirmation of Kutty's death, more than 12 hours after a Taliban spokesperson told a news agency that the kidnapped Indian driver has been killed.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs says that efforts are still on to try and secure Kutty's release.
The Ministry also said that the Afghan Interior Ministry has not yet confirmed the report.
According to the news agency, Taliban spokesperson, Qari Mohammed Yousef, had informed them that Kutty had been killed on Tuesday evening.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also met National Security Adviser M K Narayanan on the issue on Tuesday night.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told Kutty's family members that the news of his killing is not correct and yet to be confirmed.
Kutty, who belongs to Chingoly in Kerala, was abducted from his car along with two guards and a driver from the Nimroze province in Afghanistan late on November 19.
Kutty is the only source of livelihood for his family.
The deadline given by the kidnappers to his employers, the Border Roads Organisation, was extended till Tuesday night.
On Monday, the Afghan authorities were able to establish contact with the kidnappers of Kutty, after one of three Afghans, who was kidnapped along with Kutty, was released.
Earlier, the Cabinet secretary formed a group of personnel from the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs and personnel from security agencies to look into the matter.
