Mumbai: A Mumbai Police jeep ran over 10 people in Borivili on Saturday evening.
In the accident Harshad D Sariya, a resident of Borivili, died on the spot and three out of the nine injured are in critical condition. The injured are being treated in Bhagwati hospital, Borivili.
The Motor Transport Department of Mumbai Police had deployed the van to take National Security Guard (NSG) personnel for a camp in the city.
These NSG personnel have been undergoing training for anti-hijacking operations in Mumbai.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the van driver, A N Pandya, lost control of the vehicle and ran over roadside pedestrians.
The vehicle also hit and damaged a cloth shop M/s Neha collections in Borivili.
"I took a few steps and before I realised a van ran over five or six people," one of the injured said.
The injured, including a child, were identified as Dilip Lalwani (50), Vasiahlai Rane (53), Malind Wilson Lucs (40), Bhavana Narayan Lucas (18), Nancy Lucas (9) and Sachin Tawade (20). Two others have not been identified as yet.
The driver is absconding but the Mumbai Police have launched a hunt to nab him. The Army has also been informed about the accident.
"I cannot comment on anything till the time the driver is caught and the car is inspected thoroughly," Senior Police Inspector, Borivili, Pravin Tiwari said.
The most unfortunate part of this incident was that even after losing a family member, relatives of Sariya had to run from pillar to post to claim the dead body.
"I can?t figure out anything, the police is saying that the dead body will go for a postmortem," Ashish Sariaya, relative of the deceased said.
The relatives of the victim have said that it was a freak accident but they also say that with the driver being a policeman, the chances of justice being delivered is slim.
