RAMNAD: The Wildlife department and bird lovers are worried about the decrease in number of birds arriving at the four bird sanctuaries located in different parts of the district. The district has four bird sanctuaries — Keelaselvanur-Melaselvanur, Chithrankudi, Kanjirankulam and Therthankal. These sanctuaries are the haven for migratory birds for six months and all the four water bodies are being maintained properly. The annual survey on birds conducted by the wildlife department in the four sanctuaries revealed a shocking figure. Around 3,787 birds have arrived at Melaselvanur sanctuary as against the previous arrival of 10,063. The birds arrival at Chittrankudi sanctuary is only 3,129 birds as against last year’s 3,330.In Kanjirankulam, only 2,200 birds came as against last year’s 3,135, while around 10,090 flocked to Therthankal compared to 15,035 birds in 2011.Many birds, including Flamingo, snake bird, open bill stork, grey heron, common moorhen, common coot, white Ibis, Asian open pill stork, little egret, large egret and grey felicon, used to arrive from Siberia, Thailand and Pakistan to the sanctuaries, said a senior officer of wildlife department.Sundara Kumar, Wildlife Warden, told Express that the water storage in tanks are poor, which could be one of the reasons for the decrease of birds’ arrival to the sanctuaries. They might come to Sakkarakottai tank next month, he added.
