PM says Government was committed to providing quota in educational institutions for socially backward sections.

New Delhi: Emphasising that academic opportunities need to be made accessible to all marginalised and weaker sections of society, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said his Government was committed to providing reservation in educational institutions for socially backward sections.

While doing so, the Government will expand educational opportunities for youth, he said addressing the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day.

"As we expand educational opportunities, we must ensure that these opportunities are accessible to all marginalized and weaker sections of our society," Singh said.

"Our Government is committed to providing reservation in educational institutions to students from socially backward sections of society," he said.

Noting that it is his Government's "solemn commitment", the Prime Minister said "in this manner, we will recognise and reward individual merit and hard work while working for an inclusive society."
