New Delhi: Perhaps taking a cue from its Indian counterpart, the Bangladesh government on Wednesday banned the transmission of 10 foreign television channels – including two Indian – for broadcasting programmes contrary to the "culture and values" of that country.
The Bangladeshi information ministry asked cable operators to stop downlinking Channel V, AXN, Zoom TV, REN TV, Fashion TV, ZCOP, Music India, Cine Max, The Music and Trendz TV with immediate effect.
A cable TV operator said the law prohibited broadcasters from showing vulgar and obscene programmes or those seen as violating local customs and sensibilities.
"The transmission of the channels went against the law regulating Cable TV network operators," a statement issued by the ministry was quoted by agencies as saying. It also asked the operators to seek permission beforehand in transmitting new channels.
''These (the said channels) are contrary to clause 19 of the Cable TV Network Operation Act 2006,” read the statement.
Bangladesh's interim administration has launched a crackdown on corruption and vowed to improve law and order, since it took office after emergency was imposed in January.
