New Delhi: With the promise of a fun-filled for Rs 200, the students of Ravindra Bharati Public school in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, set off in six buses to nearby Keesara village for a picnic on Sunday.
But the sheer negligence of their school management buried the smiles of 12 children in a watery grave.
The 475-member picnic party was promised a gala time at the Uma Holiday Inns in Keesara.
But when the students reached the venue they realised that tents were put up on the banks of the Munneru rivulet instead.
During games, 21 children dived into the rivulet after a ball, and were pulled into the swirling waters where only a month ago a 100 people had drowned.
Of the 21, only four were pulled out alive, saved by local fishermen.
The bodies of 12 students were later pulled out from the water. The fate of the remaining five is still unknown.
Shockingly after the incident, instead of tending to the injured and frightened children, the school authorities fled the spot.
As soon as the news spread, parents of the children rushed to the school. The parents of the victims were inconsolable.
After the prima facie investigation, the district educational officer D Satyanarayana Reddy said he had found found fault with the school management and that a murder charge would be slapped against all school authorities concerned.
The district education authority has already cancelled the license of the school and is in the process of filing a criminal case against them.
