We often hear stories of tourists getting into trouble, while in a foreign country. This time, one tourist caused trouble for a local. This incident has come to light from China recently. A tourist was called a ‘poor ghost’ by a shop owner in the country, reported the South China Morning Post. The event happened when the tourist went into a store, and asked about the price of a piece of jewellery, but didn’t end up buying anything. On February 25, in Xiamen — situated along the southeastern coast of Fujian province — this incident took place. At a pearl shop, a woman tourist, along with her partner, went to check out some jewellery. They asked about the price of an item and then left the shop.
The shop owner wasn’t pleased with the woman’s behaviour. He referred to her as a poor ghost because she only asked about prices without making a purchase. “A poor ghost can’t afford it but still asked the price,” he remarked. The woman stated that she heard the insult and decided to confront him. A video shared on local online media captured the moment she questioned him about the insult.
The video, that’s gaining popularity online, shows the woman asking: “Did you insult me just now? Do you believe I’m an idiot? Did you call me a poor ghost?” The owner responded rudely, saying, “If you can’t afford it, aren’t you a poor ghost? Why did you even come in?”
When the argument got intense, the visitor asked the police for help. They came immediately to solve the dispute.
Authorities, including the police and market officials, condemned the actions of the business owner, stating that his behaviour was unacceptable. He later accepted his mistake and asked for an apology. “I apologise sincerely. I had personal issues on my mind that day,” he expressed to the visitor, who accepted his apology.
The authorities have directed the owner to temporarily close the shop and use this time to reflect on his actions. The video accumulated around 75,000 likes and over 13,000 comments. So far, several users have commented on the video.
One user wrote, “You should have informed him that he’s the true poor ghost for attempting to profit here.”
Another commented, “Please tell us where the shop is, so people like us who don’t have much money can stay away. The owner can then just serve rich customers.”
