All the fans of Indian cricket know that the legendary World Cup-winning skipper, MS Dhoni is known to be calm on the pitch. Well, his former teammate, Mohit Sharma who currently plays for the Gujarat Titans, revealed a story where even Dhoni’s patience was put to the test.
Speaking in the 2 Sloggers podcast on YouTube, the 36-year-old narrated a story which involved the legendary skipper who was seemingly frustrated by the antics of Deepak Chahar.
“Deepak Chahar has received a lot of abuse. When we were there in 2019, we sat outside with Karan. Deepak was playing and we were sweating when playing in Chennai, it gets really hot there,” the Indian international revealed.
The GT pacer revealed that Chahar had bowled a knuckle-ball (a normal variation which is used by a lot of fast-bowlers) during the Chennai Super Kings’ match in the M.A Chidambaram Stadium.
After getting hit, the CSK skipper at the time went ahead and told Chahar not to bowl the same delivery and asked him to try something else. But despite this Chahar went on to use the same delivery and the result was as expected, he got hit for runs.
“He bowled a knuckle-ball and this went over the head. Mahi bhai told not to bowl the knuckle ball. He said okay and all and after 1-2 deliveries he did it again. Mahi bhai came in and put his arm around him said 2-3 things and went,” Mohit shared.
But it was after the game that Deepak told Mohit who was on the bench for that game about what Dhoni had said to him which left the Indian veteran in splits.
“After the game, he told us, ‘Mahi bhai said ‘Bewakoof tum nai ho, mein hoon'”.
Both Mohit and Chahar have had a fairly eventful period with the Chennai Super Kings. Both men have gone on to represent the national team as well as a result of their exploits in the Indian Premier League. But the former is reaching the final stages of his career while the latter is looking to cope with his recurring issues related to injuries.
Now with the retention rules yet to be announced for the 2025 mega-auctions, it will be interesting to see if some of these players will continue with their respective franchises or will we get to see new faces in new teams to give us a change of pace.
