A year after cricketer-turned politician Kirti Azad was suspended from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), his wife Poonam is likely to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Azad, however, refused to confirm his wife's decision. "It's her decision. She is an independent woman and free to make her own choices. I have no right to comment on this since I am a suspended MP. Whatever she decides will be in the best interest of the nation," he said.
He was suspended last year for publicly targeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over corruption in the District Cricket Association (DDCA).
The development comes a day after Navjot Singh Sidhu gave up his Rajya Sabha membership and quit the BJP. He is likely to join AAP.
Though there are speculations that his wife Navjot Kaur is also planning to quit the BJP, she on Tuesday denied resigning from the party.
"I have not resigned from BJP. I am still working for my constituency," Navjot Kaur, who represents Amritsar East in the Punjab Assembly, said.
Punjab is scheduled to elect a new Assembly in early 2017. the BJP-SAD combine has been in power in the state since 2007 and faces a tough opponent in the form of AAP with the Congress, too, trying to bounce back under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh.
