How to Play the Gartic Phone Game

Set up a game of Gartic Phone via the official website. Simply visit the Gartic Phone website and click or tap the Start button to start a game. You’ll be taken to another screen, where you can choose a preset (Normal for the basic Gartic Phone rules, unless there’s another one you want) and invite other players to the game. In the Custom Settings tab, you can also set the number of turns per album, the task flow (i.e., writing then drawing, which is the default), and the time allotted per round. Select the Invite button to get a link you can send to other players. When you’re ready, select the Start button once more to begin the game!

Begin the game by writing a drawing prompt. Here’s where our suggested prompts above will come in handy! At the start of each game, you’ll have to come up with a prompt or phrase and type it into the text box shown on screen. This prompt can be anything, from something really simple to super complex; it’s up to you! When you’ve finished your prompt, select the “Done!” button to finalize it. After entering your prompt, you’ll also be able to customize the settings for that album. You can choose the display mode, whether or not there’s a voice-over, and the exhibition flow (whether albums show from beginning to end or vice versa).

Draw the Gartic Phone prompt you’re given. Once all prompts are entered, the game will automatically send you another player’s prompt (and send yours to another player, too). Read the prompt you’re given, then do your best to illustrate it! You’ll have a limited amount of time (typically around 60 seconds, unless you changed the game’s settings) to do so. You can be as artistic or basic as you want with these illustrations. It’s all about the humor and the attempt, not drawing perfectly!

Try to guess the original prompt for another drawing. Gartic Phone automatically shuffles around prompts and drawings each round—so, once you finish your drawing, you’ll be shown someone else’s, and you’ll have to try and guess what the original prompt for that drawing was. Type your best guess into the text box given and enter it. When the timer runs out, the next round will begin! Try to be descriptive when you’re guessing a prompt. The more you add, the more the next artist will have to work with. Gartic Phone is a lot like the classic game of Telephone—but instead of whispering phrases to one another, you’re drawing them and seeing how twisted the original message gets.

Keep drawing and guessing prompts until the game ends. Gartic Phone’s gameplay is a cycle—you’ll draw a prompt, try to guess a prompt based on a drawing, then make another drawing based on someone else’s interpretation of a prompt, and so on. The game will end after every prompt’s album has a certain number of drawings and guesses; after that, all that remains is to look at the results! At the end of the game, Gartic Phone will take you all through each prompt and subsequent drawings and guesses, so you can see their evolution. You can also opt to save a prompt album as a GIF (which plays screenshots of the prompt, drawing, prompt, drawing, and so on).
