New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday courted controversy by tweeting pictures of the Indian Army's dog squad doing yoga and captioning it "New India". Gandhi's tweet drew a sharp retort from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who accused him of mocking International Yoga Day and insulting the forces.
The pictures in the tweet showed the Army dog unit and their trainers in a prostrate position.
Shah took to Twitter to criticise Gandhi and said while the Congress supports the medieval practice of triple talaq, it insults the armed forces again. He also accused the Congress of spreading negativity.
Congress stands for negativity. Today, their negativity was seen in their clear support to the medieval practice of Triple Talaq. Now, they mock Yoga Day and insult our forces (yet again!)Hoping the spirit of positivity will prevail. It can help overcome toughest challenges. https://t.co/sC00yrBcpA— Amit Shah (@AmitShah) June 21, 2019
Defence minister Rajnath Singh also criticised Gandhi's tweet.
With due respect to you, @RahulGandhi Ji, these are proud members of the Indian Army and they contribute to the safety of our nation.
The BJP contended that life is only about a joke for the Congress chief as he is in the habit of posting photographs of his pet dog.
BJP national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said it was "painful" to see a senior politician "ridiculing" International Yoga Day.
It’s painful to see how a senior politician is ridiculing #IYD2019 ! But this is hardly surprising as they have always apologetic about and hence either pooh-poohed everything rooted in Indian Culture and traditions !Is it vote bank politics that is driving them to do this? https://t.co/US7LZLGD1c— Dr. VINAY Sahasrabuddhe (@vinay1011) June 21, 2019
BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance had seen a new India, Gandhi's tweet reveals a new Congress under his leadership.
Gandhi was also trolled on Twitter, with a number of people posting pictures about the Congress while poking fun at him and the party.
