The banned Paresh Barua led faction of ULFA has decided not to call any Assam bandh from April 6 to 15.

Guwahati: The banned Paresh Barua led faction of ULFA has decided not to call any Assam bandh from April 6 to April 15 in view of the upcoming Rongali Bihu celebrations in the state.

"We have decided not to go ahead with our earlier plan of calling bandhs during the visit of the head of the government and other senior central leaders to the state in the interest of the indigenous people during the forthcoming Rongali Bihu festival", the outfit's Publicity Incharge Arunodoy Dohotiya said in a statement e-mailed to PTI on Tuesday.

The interest of the Assamese people "are our topmost priority and on the request from different sections of the society we have decided to suspend our bandh programmes temporarily", he added.

The outfit would, however, continue to oppose the visit of central leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the state.

The outfit had called a bandh on April 2 protesting against the Prime Minister's visit to address two poll rallies during the first phase but it failed to evoke any response with people coming out in large numbers to attend the rallies.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Barpeta and Mangaldai assembly constituencies in Lower Assam on April 8.
