Ahmedabad: Terming Chief Minister Narendra Modi's plans for a three-day fast for peace, harmony and unity in Gujarat as a 'political gimmick', Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil on Tuesday asked the BJP leader to apologise for the 2002 communal riots.

In an open letter to Modi, Congress leader Gohil said, "Your so called three-day fast and Sadbhavna mission stands nullified with your record of hatred, violence and bloodshed. And all the while, you have been unapologetic. First say sorry to six crore Gujaratis and people of India before you embark on yet another publicity stunt."

"I was amused to read about your Sadbhavna Mission and your cathartic announcement of a three-day fast. This is nothing but a political gimmick," he stated.

Following the Supreme Court verdict on Zakia Jafri's complaint, Modi today hit out at his detractors for "defaming" him for the 2002 riots and announced that he would undertake a three-day fast for peace, harmony and unity in Gujarat.

The BJP leader said that as part of his responsibility to strengthen social harmony and brotherhood, he is planning to start a movement called 'Sadbhavana Mission'.

Gohil alleged that Modi's Sadbhavna Mission and new found secularism smacked of hypocrisy, deceit, narcissism and lies.

"This is a political stunt to deflect attention from the Lokayukta issue, the multi-crore corruption and scams in the state and from the Haren Pandya killing issue which Pandya's family members claim was a political murder," he added.
