Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the Ambedkar University in Lucknow, was greeted with protests as soon as he began speaking at the event on Friday. The protesting students were, however, made to leave the auditorium before the Prime Minister began his address.

However, the Prime Minister broke his silence on the issue of Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide at the Hyderabad Central University.

Disapproving of the politics over the issue, the Prime Minister said, "A mother has lost her son in Hyderabad, reason and politics aside."

He further said, "I can understand the agony of Rohith Vemula's family, I was hurt when I came to know that he was forced to end his life," adding that "mother India has lost a son".

The Prime Minister also recalled the contributions of Dr BR Ambedkar, saying he did a lot for the nation. He said, "Ambedkar has lived and died for the country."

"Dr Ambedkar did a lot for the nation but one thing he was particular about was education," said the Prime Minister, adding, "Look at Dr Ambedkar's life, he faced several obstacles, even insults. But he had the strength and faced obstacles."

Meanwhile, the Union HRD Ministry ordered a judicial inquiry into the Rohith Vemula suicide case. HRD Minister Smriti Irani also talked to the mother and brother of Vemula.
