Afghanistan continued their dream run in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they got the better of Sri Lanka to strengthen their position on the points table. It was a clinical win for Afghanistan as they outclassed the 1996 World Champions in all three departments to register a 7-wicket win in Pune. They controlled the game well and had an upper hand over the Lanka throughout the game.
Set 242 to win after a disciplined bowling display, Afghanistan finished on 242-3 with Azmatullah Omarzai unbeaten on 73 and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi 58 not out, the pair sharing an unbroken stand of 111.

Shahidi and Co. have now moved to fifth spot in the points table with 6 points and putting up a solid case in the semifinal race.
Afghanistan have beaten three former champions in the ongoing tournament – England (2019), Pakistan (1992) and Sri Lanka (1996).

South Africa wicketkeeper batter Quinton De Kock leads the most-runs tally at the moment with 431 runs from six matches. David Warner of Australia is in second place, having 413 runs under his belt, whereas Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand is in third place with 406 runs to show. India skipper Rohit Sharma who played a fine 87-run knock against England is placed at the fourth spot with 398 runs.
After Rohit, South Africa’s Aiden Markram is in fifth place having scored 356 runs, while Kohli is narrowly behind in sixth place with 354 runs from six outings after recording his first-ever World Cup duck on Sunday.
Golden Ball Race
Adam Zampa continues to lead the charts for the golden ball standings, with 16 wickets, whereas Bumrah drew level with Mitchell Santner as the duo have 14 scalps each. Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi is fourth with 13 wickets, while Dilash Madushanka and Marco Jansen are fifth and sixth respectively with the same amount of wickets but they are behind the Pakistan pacer due to their economy.
Gerald Coetzee is in sixth place with 12 wickets, followed by New Zealand’s Matt Henry who has slipped to seventh with 11 successes.
Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede is next on the list with 11 wickets, alongside Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka. Kuldeep Yadav is 10th on the list with 10 scalps under his kitty.
