Sonali Phogat Murder: Ministry of Home Affairs Hands Over Probe to CBI; Family Welcomes Decision
Goa Police will hand over their complete investigation to the CBI, said CM Pramod Sawant, adding that the police will fully cooperate

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday recommended a CBI probe into BJP leader Sonali Phogat’s death case. Phogat, a former Tik Tok star from Hisar in Haryana and contestant on the reality TV show Big Boss, was brought dead to a hospital in North Goa on August 23, a day after arriving in the coastal state.

“The (Union) Home Minister has given the case to CBI after the family’s continuous demand. Now, the CBI will investigate. Goa Police will hand over their complete investigation to the CBI. Goa Police will fully cooperate,” said Goa CM Pramod Sawant. Goa Police will hand over their complete investigation to the CBI. Goa Police will fully cooperate,” said Goa CM Pramod Sawant.

Sawant had also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to hand over the murder case to the central agency.

The home ministry asked the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to get the case probed by the CBI, an official privy to the development told PTI. The CBI functions under the administrative control of the DoPT.

CM Sawant said that though he has faith in Goa Police, the people of Haryana have sought a CBI investigation. He hailed the Goa Police for its “tremendously good investigation” into the case and said the officials have also got some clues.

“But due to the demand of people from Haryana and also Sonali Phogat’s daughter, we have decided to write to the Union Home Ministry to hand over this case to the CBI,” Sawant was quoted as saying.

Rinku Phogat, brother of Sonali Phogat welcomed the Centre’s decision for a CBI probe into her death and said that “our family has been demanding CBI investigation in this matter right from the start”. He further said the family suspects a “conspiracy” behind her death and only a CBI probe can bring the truth out.

The Goa Police have so far arrested five people in connection with the case. These include two associates of Phogat who have been charged with murder.
