Ashutosh Rana is regarded as one of the most exceptionally talented actors in Indian cinema. In his career spanning more than 100 films, he has left an indelible mark on the audience’s hearts with his acting prowess in Sangharsh, Karm Yuddh, and Dushman. Amongst these films, Dushman directed by Tanuja Chandra, remains one of his most appreciated works. Playing the role of the antagonist psychopathic-killer Gokul Pandit, Ashutosh managed to overshadow the lead pair, actors Sanjay Dutt and Kajol. In many scenes of the film, Ashutosh Rana didn’t have any dialogue. Still, he managed to send chills down the spine of the viewers with his expressions. Dushman was Ashutosh’s debut film and cemented his position in the film industry.
As per the media reports, Gokul Pandit’s character became so popular that the directors started making more films on similar psycho-killer characters.
Ashutosh Rana won the Filmfare Award, Zee Cine Award, Sansui Viewers Choice Award, and Screen Award under the best actor in a negative role category. Kajol plays the dual role of Sonia and Naina Sehgal in this film. Sanjay Dutt enacted a blind army officer Major Suraj Singh Rathod. Dushman also stars an ensemble star cast of actors Jas Arora, Tanvi Azmi, Pratima Kazmi and others. Anupam Shyam, Pramod Moutho and others also played important roles in Dushman. Mahesh Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt produced this film.
There are many other intriguing facts associated with this film. As per the IMDB reports, this film was offered to the actors Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Bobby Deol. When they rejected the offer, Sanjay Dutt was roped in to play the lead Major Suraj Singh Rathod. For the female lead, initially, Sridevi and Manisha Koirala were being contemplated, but they refused and Kajol was signed.
Produced on a budget of Rs 4 crore, Dushman was released at the cinema halls on May 29, 1998, and garnered Rs 10.16 crore. It was a commercial success at the box office.
