In a recent theatre play Humare Ram, Ashutosh Rana’s portrayal of Ravan attracts the audience with his profound devotion to Lord Shiva. The actor’s acting power is highlighted when he offers his head in exchange for a coconut. This act of devotion comes alive when Ashutosh Rana chants the Shiv Tandava Stotra in Hindi instead of Sanskrit, enhancing its appeal and making it popular on social media.
The play, presented in Delhi’s Kamani Auditorium, starts with a grand depiction of Lord Ram’s court, immediately engaging the audience. The narrative suggests that to grasp the greatness of Lord Ram, one must understand his adversary. Besides, Ravan portrays the classic idea that a hero is defined by his enemies.
As the play unfolds, Ravan emerges from among the audience, adding to the immersive experience. Rahul Bhuchar, as Lord Ram, engages directly with the audience, adding a personal touch that resonates well with the viewers. The play cleverly uses modern technology and VFX to transition scenes seamlessly, maintaining audience engagement throughout its three-hour duration.
The dialogues, written by Bhuchar and Dr Naresh Katyayan, strike a chord by using simple, verse-based Hindi that departs from the traditional Sanskrit-laden scripts typical of epic tales. The play also features a strong cast, including performances by notable figures like Tarun Khanna as Shiva and Harleen Kaur Rekhi as Sita, among others. Overall, Humare Ram offers a fresh take on the classic story, appreciated by a contemporary audience.
Rana received recognition for his negative role in Dushman, where he played a cold-blooded psychopathic killer. Throughout his career, he has played mostly negative and supporting roles. He has won two Filmfare Awards for Best Villain for his performances in Dushman and Sangharsh.
Apart from acting in Hindi films, he has also acted in films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. In 2021, Ashutosh Rana won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Web Original Film for his portrayal of a grieving father in Pagglait.
