As per the recent Henley and Partners' Passport Index for 2023, Indian passport holders have access to visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival provisions, and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in 57 countries worldwide.

Kenya, known for its rare wildlife and the iconic Masai Mara, is poised to enhance accessibility for global travellers following an announcement by Kenya’s President, William Ruto, on December 12. In a move to streamline the journey, Ruto outlined plans for a digital platform offering electronic travel authorization, eliminating the need for a visa in future. Originally intended for travellers from African nations, this initiative has now been expanded globally, enabling visitors from around the world to experience the natural wonders of Kenya. Currently, Indian tourists require a three-month tourist visa, priced at approximately Rs 6,000, for travel to Kenya.

While giving a speech, William Ruto said, “Beginning January 2024, Kenya will be a visa-free country. It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya.”

Effective January 1, 2024, the Kenyan government has eradicated visa requirements for global travellers wishing to visit the African country. While the most famous Masai Mara stands as a prime attraction, adventurers also have the option to explore places like Simba Safari, Tembo Safari, Twiga Safari and more, each promising a unique experience. After President, William Ruto’s announcement, the nation joined Benin, Gambia and Seychelles as the fourth African country to take the major step.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s economy heavily relies on tourism and the recent decision aims to attract more foreign tourists. In a similar move, Iran is also planning to waive visa requirements for travellers from 33 more countries, including India, to grow tourism and economy. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia have also chosen to take similar routes for Indian tourists. Amid the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, smaller countries such as Mongolia and Indonesia have also eased visa restrictions to attract international tourism.
