Baseball player Hwang Jae-gyun and Jiyeon, a member of the popular K-pop group T-ara, have reportedly filed for divorce mediation, marking the end of their two-year marriage. In a statement provided through her legal team, Jiyeon explained that they had mutually agreed to initiate the divorce process after being unable to resolve a disagreement. According to the statement, they have been living separately due to this unresolved conflict, and the divorce mediation process has now been officially filed with the Seoul Family Court.
“Hello. This is Jiyeon. First, I want to convey my apologies for greeting you with such unfortunate news. We mutually agreed to proceed with divorce mediation. We ask for your generous understanding regarding the delay in making an official statement. I will do my best to greet you as a better version of myself in the future. Thank you,” reads the official statement shared by Jiyeon, as per Soompi.
Jiyeon, 31, is known for her role in the renowned girl group T-ara and her husband, Hwang Jae Gyun, 37, is a standout player for KT Wiz. They married in December 2022 and their union had been celebrated by many fans from both the music and sports worlds.
The first signs of trouble in the couple’s relationship reportedly appeared earlier this year, with rumours about a possible divorce circulating in June. These rumours were intensified when Lee Kwang-gil, a baseball commentator, said during a live broadcast that Hwang was “getting divorced.” This comment sparked widespread discussion online, but neither Jiyeon nor Hwang Jae Gyun responded to them at the time.
Despite the couple’s initial denial of any marital issues, Jiyeon’s absence from social media and her decision to stop wearing her wedding ring in public appearances only fueled the divorce rumours.
Jiyeon, who first gained fame with T-ara in 2009, has also carved out a successful career as an actress. Meanwhile, Hwang Jae-gyun, a veteran baseball player, began his professional career in 2007 and had a brief stint in Major League Baseball with the San Francisco Giants.
