Chennai: After a video of a man from Chennai hurling a dog from a rooftop created a furore on social media, the culprit has been identified as a medical student from a local college.
In an incident that describes the extent of cruelty towards animals, the video shot in slow motion shows the dog whining in pain as the man who committed the dastardly act poses for the camera with a sly grin.
The culprit featuring in the video has been identified as Gautam S, a MBBS student from the Madha Medical College.
The video which went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp garnered angry reactions from social media users and activists who sought a strong punishment for the culprit.
Post the furore, Chennai's cyber crime cell swung into action to identify the man in the picture.
Earlier, an NGO, Humane Society International too had offered a reward of Rs 1 Lakh to anyone who could lead them to the culprit.
"The sudden rise in cases with regard to cruelty to animals is only because we have no law. What do you expect when the law gives a maximum punishment of Rs 50. Penal provisions needs to be very strong so that people have to think twice before committing any crime. Why are penal provisions not so stong? Everytime such incidents happen we always remind the ministry. We have already submitted a draft of the Animal Welfare Law, the new one which has stringent provisions but the Ministry is just not passing it. It's still lying with the Ministry. but we are pushing for it," PETA activist Nikunj Sharma said.
