Hours after the violent clashes in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Javed Ahmed admitted that the force did not anticipate that the protesters were "so heavily armed". The police force lost the Mathura Superintendent of Police Mukul Dwivedi, Station House Officer Santosh Kumar and a constable in the violence in Mathura on Thursday evening.
Facing flak over reports of alleged intelligence failure, Ahmed said that the police team went to inspect the area for the anti-encroachment drive. "They attacked us without any provocation. The miscreants used explosive materials including gas cylinders to keep us away from the spot. There was some firing too," the officer claimed.
"A total 22 people have died including a woman. We have arrested 124 people so far. The mob was led by Rambriksh Yadav, Bidesh Yadav, Rakesh Gupta and one more person whose identity is yet to be known. They are the main accused in the case and all of them will be charged under the National Security Act (NSA)," he added.
His supporters belonging to a splinter group, known as Swadheen Bharat Andolan, clashed with the police on Thursday when the force tried to evict them from Jawahar Bagh.
