TN Govt to Order Probe Against TASMAC for Selling Liquor in Black
Trade union members claim that the black market of liquor in Tamil Nadu is worth Rs 500 crore (approx).

Chennai: The AIADMK government on Tuesday promised to initiate a probe against the employees of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) for selling alcohol in black.

The state government intervened after CNN-News18 exposed how TASMAC employees are allegedly selling liquor way past the deadline and that too in black.

The illegal practice was reported at several TASMAC outlets despite Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's initiative to restrict sale of liquor across the state.

According to a government circular all state-owned liquor shops should down their shutters by 10 pm. But it has been found that liquor is openly available beyond the deadline at some of the TASMAC outlets.

In a video shot by the CNN News18 team, one can hear a conversation where the outlet employees are telling customers that they can buy liquor any time, even at midnight.

Trade union members claim that the black market of liquor is worth almost Rs 500 crore.

TKS Elangovan, Spokesperson, DMK, had said, "AIADMK's phased prohibition on liquor was an eyewash to win the elections. We demand a special enforcement force to curb this illegal practice and stern action against the culprits."
