'This Silver Medal Is Gold For Us': PM Modi Congratulates Neeraj Chopra On Phone Call, Asks Him About Injury
Chopra on Thursday became the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two successive Olympic medals with a silver in men’s javelin throw in the Paris Games.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dialed ace athlete Neeraj Chopra and congratulated him on winning the silver medal in the Paris Olympics’ javelin throw final event.

Neeraj Chopra was the favourite to win the gold medal for India in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics, but despite his season-best throw of 89.45 m in the second attempt, the 26-year-old had to settle for a silver medal. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem breached the 90-meter mark twice in the final on Thursday (August 8) to win the gold medal, which is also the first-ever individual gold medal in Olympics history by a Pakistani.

As the PM told Chopra that he had made the nation proud, the latter regretted not being able to clinch the gold medal and push himself due to his injuries.

However, the PM lauded Chopra’s efforts and said, “You’ve given your best despite injuries and we are proud of you. This silver medal for us.” Chopra replied saying he’d work harder in the future.

The PM also lauded Chopra’s family back in Haryana for supporting him so well. He asked him about his injuries and added, “Let’s discuss the event in detail when we meet.”

“Neeraj Chopra is excellence personified! Time and again he’s shown his brilliance. India is elated that he comes back with yet another Olympic success. Congratulations to him on winning the Silver,” PM Modi wrote on ‘X’ on Thursday. “He will continue to motivate countless upcoming athletes to pursue their dreams and make our nation proud,” he added.
