ELURU: Six high school students and a teacher drowned in river Godavari on Sunday. The body of one student has been recovered while search for others was on when reports last came in. As many as 72 students of Tanuku municipal high school went for 'vana bhojanam' (community lunch) at Kakaraparu village in West Godavari district. After lunch at around 12 noon, they all went to the river bank for recreation.
Some of the students ventured into the waters for a swim but in a sudden twist, six of them- B Rajeswari, Y Manohar, P Venkateswarlu (ninth class), E Venkatesh (sixth class), B Sunitha and B Siva Krishna (fifth class) drowned. School teacher M Lakshmi Prasanna Kumari, who tried to rescue the drowning children, also met with the same fate. Locals and rescuers who rushed to the spot but they could only trace the body of Manohar. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed district administration to do everything possible to trace remaining bodies.
