New Delhi: Senior journalist and former editor in chief of 'The Hindu' Siddharth Varadarajan claims that four thugs have attacked the caretaker of his flat in Delhi and threatened him. In a tweet he said, "Four thugs beat up the caretaker of my flat in Delhi, saying, 'Tell your sahib to watch what he says on TV.'
His Facebook update has more details of the alleged incident. He has updated on his Facebook saying, "Four thugs recently beat up the caretaker of my flat in Delhi. The incident took place near our home, with the thugs saying, 'Tell your sahib to watch what he says on TV.' They also issued a threat to my wife, Prof Nandini Sundar, about her Chhattisgarh case. We don't know who they are, but it's clearly aimed to intimidate. The caretaker is recovering. While the police have been helpful and are reviewing neighborhood CCTV footage, I am making this incident public on the advice of friends who believe it may serve some deterrent value".
Siddharth Varadarajan quit 'The Hindu' as its editor-in-chief last October over serious differences with the management. He is currently a commentator on TV news channels and Senior Fellow, Centre for Public Affairs and Critical Theory, New Delhi.
Siddharth Varadarajan has been a vocal critic of right wing politics and was recently in the news in connection with the Penguin withdrawing Wendy Doniger's book 'The Hindus' from the market. He had asked Penguin to terminate his contract with them in protest.
His wife Prof Nandini Sundar is a well-known activist and sociologist. Her strong views on Maoist problem in Chhattisgarh have led to controversies. Siddharth Varadarajan is a US citizen by birth. His editorship of 'The Hindu' was challenged by BJP leader Dr Subramanian Swamy.
