Narayana Murthy gifts 4-month-old grandson Infosys shares worth Rs 240 crore, internet asks, 'No 70 hour work week for him?'

According to reports, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has made a generous move by gifting 15 lakh shares, valued at over Rs 240 crore, to his four-month-old grandson Ekagrah Rohan Murty. Recent regulatory filings indicate that the 77-year-old transferred the shares, amounting to 0.04 percent of Infosys’ stake, to his grandson in an off-market transaction on Friday. This news quickly spread across social media, with many Desis marvelling at the possibility of the little one becoming India’s youngest millionaire, as reported by the company in its exchange filing.

Naturally, this development reignited the ever-popular ’70-hours work week’ memes that have been circulating among Indians ever since Mr. Murthy emphasised the importance of youth putting in such long hours at work. His philosophy, which many find unattainable and lacking in consideration, has made him a central figure in these humorous memes.

Following the share transfer news, one user on ‘X’ joked, “For the first time in history Infosys paid a fresher more than 3.5 lpa” Another quipped, “I work 70 hrs so that Narayan Murthy sir’s grand son can chill in peace,” while a third added, “Now we know why he wanted his employees to work 70 hrs a week.” These playful jabs at the 70-hour work week kept the humour alive, with a fourth user writing, “So his grandson doesn’t have to work 70+ hours a week!”

Earlier, when Mr. Murthy reminisced about an 11-hour train journey he embarked on without a ticket, all to accompany his wife, Sudha Murty, humorously attributing it to his hormones “kicking in” during his youthful phase. Even then, netizens couldn’t resist poking fun at Murthy, considering his well-known advocacy for a 70-hour workweek, a philosophy seemingly overlooked during his spontaneous train journey.

In hindsight, it seems Mr. Murthy may not have clocked ’70 hours’ before crafting a statement that refuses to fade from memory!
