THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: Kamalamma passed away, midway quitting her fight for a piece of land. She was laid to rest in the six feet of land, fate had reserved for her. Huts of five families, including amalamma’s, situated in the ‘puramboke’ of Plamoodu Bund colony, were bulldozed last year. Since then, Kamalamma, daughters Radhmani, Baby and Baby’s husband Maniyan, had been fighting for justice. When the five families began a strike in front of the Secretariat, bedridden Kamalamma too joined them. Lying in a cot, Kamalamma was active in the strike till police removed tents, chairs and cots from footpaths in front of the Secretariat months back. She later took refuge in her neighbour’s house. On Friday morning, eighty-one-year old Kamalamma ended her strike with her troubled life. Express, on October 22, had reported on the sufferings of the families who were evicted from the Plamoodu Bund colony. While giving the order for demolition, the High Court had directed the Revenue Department to find alternative land for the evictees. The Revenue officials gave the least regard to the court directive while evicting the families on December 10, 2010. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had intervened in the issue back in June. He had directed the District Collector to take immediate action. The Collector, in turn, had asked the Tahsildar to submit a report. While the officials have been engaged in passing the buck, the five families have been spending their lives in a miserable condition. Kamalamma’s daughter Radhamani, a Kudumbashree worker, was taking care of her. Kamalamma died on Friday morning after a prolonged illness. She is survived by sons Kunjmon, Kochumon and daughters Baby and Radhamani. Her funeral was held at the LMS church on Friday.
