The bomb scare and subsequent evacuation at malls in Gurgaon on Friday afternoon was part of a routine security drill.

New Delhi: The people visiting Gurgaon's shopping malls on Friday afternoon were given a rude shock when the authorities asked them to evacuate the building following a bomb scare.

Although the malls — MGF, Metropolitan Mall and DT City Centre Mall — were evacuated and scoured by emergency personnel, it was later learnt that the exercise was part of a routine security drill.

After the drill was conducted, Senior Superintendent of Police, Hanif Qureshi, announced that the entire exercise was a mock drill and that there was no need to panic.

The drill will also be conducted in commercial establishments, bus stands, railway stations, post offices and other leading malls where people tend to congregate, PTI quoted him as saying.

"At 1230 hrs, a group of 30-40 policemen came to the mall and said there was a bomb scare. There are four malls in Gurgaon and we were told to conduct a thorough search. An hour later, we were told to evacuate cinema halls as well," vice president of MGF mall in Gurgaon, Brigadier Baljeet Singh, said.
