More than 300 students from schools in and around the city participated in the inter-school science and literary fest organised by Trivandrum International School (TRINS) to revive and rejuvenate the scientific temperament of students. St Thomas School, Trivandrum, won the overall championship, while the trophy for the best participating team went to L’ecole Chempaka.
Based on the theme ‘Sustainable Energy,’ the Fest tested the hands-on problem solving skills and abilities of students. It proved to be a platform where young minds could stretch and cross the frontiers of scientific inquiry through challenging/exciting puzzles and problems, a statement from TRINS said.
Inaugurating the Fest, R V G Menon, former principal of Government College of Engineering, Kannur, and former director of Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT), exhorted youngsters to conserve and use energy more efficiently.
Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice-President, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), underlined the fact that science is also a tool that is sometimes being misused by human beings, using the analogy of a knife which can be used for good and criminal acts.
G Vijayaraghavan, director, TRINS, and Srinivas K Naidu, principal, TRINS, were also present at the inauguration.
In the Science Fair-2012 held at TRINS earlier, students showcased models and exhibits that indicated the rapid advancements likely in the field of science. Some of the models included ‘Electricity from fruits’, ‘Milk that changes colour’ and ‘Egg that is smart.’
