CHENNAI: An aeronautical engineering student of a city college set himself ablaze allegedly due to poor performance in the exam, at Semmenchery on Monday. He sustained 98 per cent burns and died in the hospital.C Vijayakumar (19) of Kutchireddy Palayam in Andhra Pradesh, was doing his second year at a private college on Old Mahabalipuram Road, investigating officer Venkatesan told Express. He was staying with a group of college-mates at a TNHB flat on Ponniamman Koil Road in Sholinganallur, he said.Tracing the sequence of events that led to the incident, he said Vijayakumar appeared for a three-hour Math paper from 8.45 am-11.45 am in the college and returned to his room. He had sounded upset, fearing that he might end up with ‘arrears’ in the subject, his friends later told the cops.Around 3 pm, he stepped out, telling them that he was going to an ATM centre. A little later, ‘108’ emergency services got a call, saying a youth was standing on the road behind the apartment building, all ablaze. “It was Vijayakumar and he had set himself afire with petrol,” the cop said. While being taken to the KMC hospital, he reportedly told the paramedics that he took the step due to fear of ‘arrears’ and that his family might take him to task for it.
