New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje on Thuesday briefed former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee about the crisis arising out of the face-off between the Meenas and Gurjars in Rajasthan for reservations as the party's Central leadership met in New Delhi to discuss ways to deal with the situation.
With tension between the two communities threatening to escalate in the state, BJP chief Rajnath Singh drove down straight to Vajpayee's residence on his arrival from Goa and held a two-hour meeting with the former prime minister and senior party leaders LK Advani and Jaswant Singh, a known critic of Raje.
"We spoke to Vasundhra Raje, who gave us detailed information about the situation," Singh told reporters after the meeting. He said the Chief Minister expressed the hope that the crisis would be resolved through talks with different groups.
The BJP chief, whose colleagues Jaswant Singh and Sahib Singh Verma had been critical of Raje's handling of the Gurjar protests, insisted that there was no discussion at the meeting about any leadership change in the state.
"There was no discussion on it," he remarked when asked whether the party was considering change of leadership in Rajasthan.
Meenas, a powerful Scheduled Tribe, makes up 12 per cent of Rajasthan's population as compared to two per cent Gurjars. They are opposed to the idea of Gurjars being classified as STs as they believe any such move will eat into their share of quotas in jobs.
