HYDERABAD: The state government is likely to lift power cuts from January 1 and instructions to the AP Transco will be issued very soon. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is said to have given enough indications to this effect to some Congress leaders.The government is in a mood to conduct local body elections in the first quarter of the new year and intends to lift the power cuts in cities and towns, relax the restrictions at mandal headquarters and continue the shedding in rural areas.Congress leaders want power cuts lifted at least in municipal areas till the end of June as otherwise it will be difficult for the party to face elections.Government whip Kondru Murali alleged that a section of media and opposition parties were carrying a negative campaign against the government and chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on power tariff hike proposed by the Discoms to the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC). He said Discoms were facing a huge revenue loss of around Rs 11,000 crore a year and mooted the hike to reduce the deficit. The APERC would take a final decision, he said.Of the 2.53 crore consumers of all categories, about 1.40 crore would not be affected by the proposed hike, he said and assured that the government would continue the 7hour free power supply to the agricultural sector.
