BANGALORE: Since its inception in September 2009 following a Supreme Court direction, the Police Establishment Board (PEB) has been in the news for one or the other reasons or controversies.
The Police Establishment Board has been set up to insulate the police transfers from the political interference. The Board, under the chairmanship of incharge DG IGP Dr S T Ramesh, met and transferred 346 Police Inspectors with immediate effect on Thursday evening. However, the very next day, the DGP's office issued the "modified" transfer list of 46 Police Inspectors without even calling a PEB meeting. This was done due to political interference, it is said.

A senior police officer said that this is a clear case of neglecting the Supreme Court guidelines.

Officers with political backing and money power got themselves transferred to convenient places.

Politicians are uneasy ever since the power to transfer police officers of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and below has been vested with the Police Establishment Board, a body set up on the directions of the Supreme Court, said an officer.

Only recommendations from the Chief Minister's office and the Home Minister were 'considered' this time, it is said.

What's your reaction?
