CHENNAI: Transport Commissioner R Sudalaikkanan on Thursday warned omnibus operators against collecting exorbitant fares during the upcoming Deepavali season. He said that stern action would be taken against those violating the rules. Following complaints that were received that private bus operators were collecting excess fare from passengers travelling to other parts of the State from Chennai, the transport commissioner convened a meeting of the private bus operators and advised them to be courteous to passengers and collect only the exact amount. The State government has allowed operation of buses owned by private schools and colleges during festival seasons like Deepavali on a contract basis. Those interested can utilise the opportunity by availing of the necessary permits from their Regional Transport Offices, the transport commissioner said.
