New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday directed the Excise Department to ensure closure of all liquor shops 48 before the polling day of the concerned districts in the state.
The government made the announcement in Lucknow on directions of the Election Commission.
News agency PTI quoted officials as saying that directions to ensure closure of all types of liquor shops 48 hours before the polling day of the concerned district have been given to all excise officers.
The attempt was aimed at curbing the practice of distribution of liquor by candidates to their supporters on the election eve and avoid any drunken brawl on the polling day, they added.
Polling for the first phase of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, would be held in 62 assembly constituencies in 13 districts on April 7 in the first phase while other phases are scheduled on April 13, 18, 23, 28, May 3 and May 8.
