New Delhi: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday said that there is a need for increasing power generation from green sources and the government aims to have 1 lakh MW renewable power capacity in the next few years. "We really need to introduce a huge element of renewable energy and I am very happy that India has taken a lead."
"The ministries of Power and Renewable Energy have decided to together take one lakh megawatt...in the next few years time and that is an absolutely doable target," he said during India Energy Congress. Currently, India has an installed renewable power generation capacity of more than 31,600 MW.
He further said: "We really need to put renewable energy into global energy basket in a significant way." Coal, Power and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier said that the government is trying to address issues in the renewable energy sector by balancing all interests and ensuring that consumers get power at an affordable price.
"There have been concerns about renewable power obligations not being met or not being enforced. There are concerns about domestic manufacturing not being able to scale up... We are trying to address these various issues," Goyal had said.
The renewable energy sector is grappling with various issues. These include non-compliance by entities in following the renewable purchase obligations in the power sector. Various efforts are underway to boost the domestic renewable energy sector.
