CHENNAI: The spurt in cases and complaints being filed against DMK partymen for corruption, land grabbing, extortion and misdemeanour seems to have put the party high command in a fix. DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi has appealed to beleaguered partymen to take the help of the party’s legal wing to deal with the spate of cases that are being filed against by them by the government. In a letter to partymen on Saturday, the veteran leader also advised partymen not to wait for the government to file cases against them and get in touch with the legal wing before hand.“Our party has a legal wing that functions at our headquarters. It functions to an extent where I have to explicitly ask about it to hear anything about it. Those who are being affected by the unbridled actions of the police at the behest of the AIADMK Government can seek legal counsel and aid from the legal wing,” Karunanidhi said in a press statement. He noted that the State police must act patiently and without haste. “During the DMK regime, the police took action only after giving sufficient warning and over time. It did not file cases like this government is doing - one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening,” said Karunanidhi.“When the DMK took charge, it did not spend all day trying to file cases against leaders and workers of rival parties, especially the AIADMK,” he added.Karunanidhi alleged that the AIADMK was foisting all these cases only to scare DMK workers and as an attempt to immobilise the party. He also dismissed the allegations and cases against his partymen as ‘false’.The octogenarian also appealed to lawyers willing to represent partymen to volunteer at the local party offices or at offices of the party mouthpiece ‘Murasoli’.
