A middle-aged-woman was allegedly killed by her relatives who suspected that she practised witchcraft at Uparwara village in Naya Raipur on Wednesday.

Four of her relatives were arrested, police said. "Dulari Bai, 52 years old, was beaten and axed to death by her brother-in-law Mehattar Sahu, his wife Rajvantin Bai and his sons Madan and Manoj in front of her house this morning," a senior police official said. All the four were arrested under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder) and other relevant sections, he said.

Preliminary probe revealed that Sahu and others often accused Dulari Bai of being `a tonhi' (witch) and practising black magic. Mehattar's daughter-in-law fell sick a few days ago, and the family held Dulari responsible, which led to Wednesday's murder. Sections of Witchcraft Atrocities Prevention Act 2005 have not been pressed yet as police are waiting for further details.
