CHENNAI: Surya Nagar has around 500 families living along the coast of the Adyar river. The children, who belong to this community are deprived of their rights. They aren’t privileged, happy or healthy as other children. They don’t have the right to education, health, protection or participation. They have to make their way through slush and sewage to reach school, their playgrounds are littered with garbage and the toilets are far form being usable. All these reasons compound and lead to high dropout rates.CRY volunteers have been interacting with such children, trying to figure out the issues and building proper communication with them.As a CRY volunteer you can organise interesting campaigns to capture the child’s voice through photographs, interact with the children, build a public opinion around it, meet the relevant authorities, generate awareness in the communities on the Right To Education Act and provide adequate information on entitlements for children and help improve the quality of schools, thus ensuring the rights of these kids.
