New Delhi: In yet another case of lawlessness in Delhi, a lawyer was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants near his residence in Delhi's Jamia Nagar on Monday evening.
The victim identified as 57-year-old Mohammad Khan, a legal advisor at the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) for more than five years, was shot at in the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Khan's family alleges that he was under pressure for a hotel deal in one of the NDMC areas. According to the family Khan was looking into files of hotels which were recently sealed for non payment of taxes and dues.
The tax dues ran into approximately Rs 186 crore.
The incident took place around 7.45 pm when Khan was heading back home in his car which was intercepted by a motorcycle at a busy street in Jamia Nagar. The assailants on the motorcycle were wearing helmets and shot at Khan from quite a close range.
A case of murder has been registered in connection with the incident, which is suspected to be the fall-out of a personal rivalry, a senior police official said. Police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the culprits.
The family also told police that he had been receiving calls from unknown people. Police have recovered his mobile phone and the call data will be
analysed, the official said.
