New Delhi: India re-affirmed on Thursday its willingness to assist Sri Lanka in finding a negotiated political settlement to the ethnic problem as a delegation of the All Party Representatives Committee (APRC) from the island nation arrived in New Delhi for discussions on various models of devolution of powers in that country.
The 15-member delegation, which will be in India till October 29, will also travel to Karnataka and Kerala to study the functioning of the grassroots institutions of Indian democracy, a spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry said.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha has set up the APRC and tasked it with finding the basis for a lasting political settlement to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.
With this in mind, the APRC is looking at various models of devolution.
It is against this background that the APRC is visiting India and will be briefed by officials of the Ministries of Law and Home Affairs on the basic features of the Indian constitution, Centre-State relations and the working of grassroots institutions such as the panchayat.
''The visit is evidence of our willingness to assist Sri Lanka in finding a negotiated, political settlement to the ethnic problem which would satisfy all sections of Sri Lankan society,'' the spokesman added.
