THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keralites gulp down not only liquor, but also milk in large quantities during Onam .If Mahabali’s Kerala was a land where milk and honey flowed in abundance, Oommen Chandy’s Kerala came somewhat close to this on Thiruvonam.A hefty price hike notwithstanding, Keralites managed to guzzle down 21.55 lakh litres of Milma milk on Onam day, a record single-day sale for the milk marketing co-operative.“On the 2010 Onam day the sales stood at 18.9 lakh litres,” said Milma general manager Satheesh K G.On Friday, the Thiruvananthapuram Union of the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation sold 6.45 lakh litres while the Ernakulam and Malabar unions sold 5.50 lakh litres and 9.60 lakh litres respectively. What has come as a surprise for Milma is that consumption had shot up despite a per-litre hike of Rs 5 effected last week.“Usually sales witness a dip for about a week after every price revision. We, in fact, were expecting sales to the tune of only 20 lakh litres on Onam day,” Satheesh said.Milma accounts for 12 lakh litres sold in the state daily.During Onam season, it goes up to 14 lakh litres on an average.Domestic procurement accounts for just 7 lakh litres and the rest is imported from the neighbouring states, primarily Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and even Maharashtra. After the hike, Milma’s double-toned milk (yellow cover) costs Rs 27 a litre, toned Rs 28 (blue cover) and Rich (pink cover) Rs 30.This Onam, curd sales also surprised Milma by touching two lakh litres.Off-season sales hover around 80,000 litres.Posthike, curd costs Rs 34 a litre.
