New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has approved Indian Medical Council's (IMC) recommendation to amend Indian Medical Council (IMC) Act to hold a nationwide common medical entrance test.
IMC is a medical education regulator, which functions under close coordination with the Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
The health ministry has circulated a note seeking opinion from other ministries on common medical entrance test. The final decision or note in this regard will be taken after wider consultations.
Sources said, the common test will be applicable for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in all colleges. Private colleges will also fall under the gambit of new ruling if implemented.
Admission tests are conducted every year for more than 32,000 undergraduate seats and 13,000 post graduate seats in medical colleges across the country.
Under the current system, applicants have to appear in more than seven entrance tests for getting admission. But with the new system, the students will have to appear in only one test.
Earlier, the IMC had approached the CBSE to work out modalities for introduction of the system. The IMC Act governs the functioning of the MCI, which is the medical education regulator.
