Jailed MP wants comedy on prison TV
Pappu Yadav says his prolonged stay in jail was taking a toll on his health and the comedy shows will help him.

New Delhi: Laughter is the best medicine, they say. So what if one is in jail serving an extended term, a little bit of humour therapy is all it takes to ward off the blues.

Apparently depressed by his extended term in Capital’s Tihar Jail, MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav has appealed a city court to give him permission to get for comedy and entertainment channels on his TV set.

Yadav - in connection with the murder of CPI-M leader Ajit Sarkar - in his appeal said that while other channels were being beamed on his TV set, he wanted to watch comedy and entertainment shows for his recreation.

In an application moved before Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau, Yadav said his prolonged stay in jail was taking a toll on his health and the comedy shows will help him.

However, the court certainly wasn’t amused at the request. It asked the MP as to why he should be given special treatment and not considered at par with other prisoners who are provided TV sets with regular channels being beamed.

However, it later took Yadav’s application into consideration and directed the Director General (Prisons) to look into his request and submit a report on May 10.

Yadav is serving a term for perjury and is charged with submitting false affidavits in the Delhi High Court. Yadav, in the affidavits, had allegedly contended that he was a resident of Delhi.

According to a criminal complaint registered in 2000, Yadav - the Lok Sabha MP from Madhepura in Bihar - had said in an affidavit that he hadn’t tampered with evidence or terrorised witnesses.
