Ayodhya: A day before Supreme Court takes up the plea to defer the judgment in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit, Ayodhya on Monday turned into a fortress with heavy deployment of security forces.
Paramilitary forces, along with the Uttar Pradesh Police, staged a flag march in the twin towns of Ayodhya and Faizabad, where security forces have been put on high alert. Heavy deployment of forces has been made at various points in both the towns.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and UP police personnel, in full anti-riot gear and totting machine guns, marched through sensitive areas, including lanes close to the disputed site.
Mounted police, anti-riot vehicles and fire tenders also participated in the drill, which began late afternoon. "The exercise was carried out to instill confidence among people, Faizabad Superintendent of Police A K Rai said.
In Lucknow, ADG (law and order) Brij Lal told reporters that the forces, which were deployed at various places for September 24 when the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court was to deliver the verdict, are constantly maintaining a vigil on the law and order situation in various parts of the state.
"The Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) are very much with us and let us see what happens tomorrow," Lal said when asked whether the CPMF had been provided to UP for a set period and will be moved to Bihar where Assembly elections will be held this October-November.
